D-Phenylalanine -Phenylalanine is an essential amino acid, meaning your body cannot manufacture it on its own and it has to be obtained from supplements or food sources. The L-forms (Levorotatory) of amino acids are bioavailable and are for protein synthesis and regulatory functions. However, the D form (Dextrorotatory) of phenylalanine, d-phenylalanine, is not absorbed into your body. Rather, it acts as an inhibiting agent to the enzymes responsible for the breakdown of endorphins, which control pain perception.
Endorphins – Endorphins, as well as enkephalins, are naturally occurring opiate-like peptides that control pain perception and produce an analgesic, or painkiller, effect. Their effects are usually of a short duration, as metabolic enzymes inhibit increased endorphin production. D-Phenylalanine may help block these enzymes, allowing increased endorphin production and prolonged and intensified analgesic affects.
